Ten-year thesis

Broadcom buys essential chips and software, keeps R&D focused, and harvests cash. Custom AI accelerators for hyperscalers are a new growth vector on top of networking, broadband, and wireless. VMware adds switching costs in the enterprise datacenter, with the usual post-acquisition pricing tension. A ten-year hold is a bet on Hock Tan’s capital allocation continuing and on custom ASICs remaining a complement to NVIDIA, not a footnote. Less beloved than NVDA; more owner-earnings-like.

The moat

Design wins that last a product generation, customer qualification, and (now) hypervisor lock-in. Scale in custom ASIC design teams. Not a consumer brand; an engineer’s default vendor.

Switching costs88

Pain, risk, or retraining required to leave.

Network effects45

The product gets better as more people use it.

Intangibles & IP86

Patents, data, licenses, process knowledge, regulation.

Scale advantage82

Fixed costs spread over a volume rivals cannot match.

Cost advantage76

Structural ability to be the low-cost producer.

Brand62

Pricing power from trust, habit, or identity.

Tech overlay

This is a tech conglomerate with a capital-allocation overlay. You need to underwrite both the silicon roadmaps and the M&A machine. VMware is a classic switching-cost software asset that Buffett would recognize immediately.

What can break it

  • Customer concentration in AI ASICs
  • VMware customer pushback and cloud migration
  • Key-person risk in capital allocation

Owner earnings yield 2.4%. Yield is judged against quality, not against a single hurdle — a fortress can be fairly priced at a lower yield than a fragile name.
