NVIDIA

CUDA is the switching-cost moat. The GPUs are the cyclical product the moat sells.

Hold

Ten-year thesis

A decade hold is not a bet on next quarter’s data-center billings. It is a bet that accelerated computing remains the scarce resource and that the CUDA / cuDNN / networking stack keeps NVIDIA as the default programming model even as custom ASICs take some training share. Earnings power is extraordinary and violently cyclical. Position size is the whole game: fortress economics, boom-bust reported numbers. If you cannot hold through a 50% drawdown in a capex winter, you do not have a ten-year thesis — you have a trade.

The moat

Switching costs in CUDA, developer mindshare, and full-stack systems (GPU + NVLink + InfiniBand/Ethernet + software). Scale in leading-edge wafers via TSMC. Brand among engineers is cult-grade.

Switching costs95

Pain, risk, or retraining required to leave.

Network effects88

The product gets better as more people use it.

Intangibles & IP94

Patents, data, licenses, process knowledge, regulation.

Scale advantage86

Fixed costs spread over a volume rivals cannot match.

Cost advantage70

Structural ability to be the low-cost producer.

Brand90

Pricing power from trust, habit, or identity.

Tech overlay

Read this as software lock-in with a hardware wrap, the same way an owner reads a railroad with scarce right-of-way. Hyperscaler ASICs are real. They are also narrow. The long tail of enterprises, startups, and research still compiles to CUDA. That long tail is the moat the cycle cannot wash out.

What can break it

  • Customer concentration and custom silicon at hyperscalers
  • Export controls
  • A multi-year AI capex hangover

Owner earnings yield 1.9%. Yield is judged against quality, not against a single hurdle — a fortress can be fairly priced at a lower yield than a fragile name.
